[Album] Love, Love, & Love

My first music album review ever! I just feel like writing down my thoughts on this record. I won’t, however, touch on the technical details (i’m no expert!). Thus, pardon my amateurish comments… =x

From My First Love to Love, Love, & Love. Still about love. All about love. And why not? We won’t ever get tired of listening to love songs, will we?

Upon first listening, only Terlalu lama and Pertemuan singkat catch my attention in totally contradictory ways. I like the former only after first play—little wonder why they put it as the second single after Takut—but i sorta scorn the latter for its similarity with another familiar song whose title i couldn’t immediately mention. This resurfaces the issues of originality surrounding their first album. If you search on youtube, several videos would pop out revealing similitudes some of their tunes have with other songs, coincidental or not.

Call it “inspired by” or whatever, it breaks my heart upon learning that songs like Dengarkan curhatku or even Perih which i love the most ‘copy’ several bars from other melodies*. Frankly my music references ain’t that wide so i cannot really single out a song and associate it with another particular song it resembles—most of which are revealed by media =p. But when the likenesses are within my (limited) musical knowledge, it’s…bad. Some of the songs in this album get me to think, “Wait. Haven’t I heard this melody before?” for which i couldn’t identify by name except for Pertemuan singkat. If the chorus part of Bersamamu takes after Close, that of Pertemuan singkat sounds like I miss you, both by Westlife.

‘Nuf said; let’s delve LL&L track by track. Well, i didn’t listen to the album in sequence of its track number—my media-player has its own rules =p—so i inadvertently started off with Cantik and ended with Terlalu lama. Aforementioned, i like Terlalu lama even before it finished playing while the rest are quite forgettable—apart from Takut evidently. However, after repeated plays, i grow to like Cantik, Kepergianmu, Kesepian, and Semua tentangmu.

Deg-degan is a mashup between Gita Gutawa’s Aku cinta dia and Aura Kasih’s Asmara, both tunefully and lyrically. Setelah lagu-lagu bertempo sedang dan cepat, playlist masuk ke lagu-lagu medium to slow tempo dimulai dari Hidup matiku, Kepergianmu, Kesepian, dan Pertemuan singkat—the slowest of them all which I dislike the most; leletnya ga nahaannn…

Kesepian is the ‘it’s so sad it’s beautiful’ kind of song that is great to be pushed as the third single to follow Perih and Rasa ini’s good leads. Pertanda cinta lyrically is Dengarkan curhatku ver.2.0 though not as ear-catchy as the archetype. Takut…ga usah dibahas lagi kali ya? Like it. Terlalu lama…is such an attention-grabber song. The chorus is so easy listening and the lyrics are so easy to memorize. One MAJOR flaw, though, the choir part is wonderfully off-pitch! ∑(o_O”) It should’ve been the grand element yet it successfully ruins the song. Wondering why they don’t redo that part… it can be cut off all right.

However, only when it comes to Semua tentangmu am i reminded of why I like Vierra in the first place: the piano~!! Dominasi piano pada lagu-lagu di album My First Love-lah yg membuatku jatuh suka—it’s also what distinguishes them from typical group bands in Indonesia. Suka aja denger dentingan indah piano/organ dibanding petikan seksi gitar atau betotan ‘sangar’ bass yg juga ga kalah kusuka. Entah kenapa, kalo pake piano tuh kesannya romantis-romantis gimanaa gitu *smile sheepishly* Sayang kemahiran jemari Kevin menari di atas tuts tak begitu ditonjolkan di album kedua Vierra ini. Vierra = Piano FTW!!

For this record, Vierra pretty much sticks to the (successful) formula used in MFL. Their sophomore album sounds like their first: fresh, cheery, bubbly melodies regardless of the lyrics. Lumrah lah layaknya perjalanan hidup anak muda yg menjadi target audience, kadang senang (upbeat) kadang sedih (slow).

Soal vokal… aku ga merasa Widi mengalami kemajuan yg berarti. Katanya sih banyak yg mengkritik suara dia yg pas-pasan, tapi menurutku suaranya mempunyai ciri khas tersendiri yg membedakan Vierra dari grup band lainnya. Her voice has this soothing effect so I could relax just by listening to her gentle voice (especially during bedtime) although in certain songs I too wish her voice could be more powerful.

If anything, I wish she could practice to sound decent on stage—cuz hers has been…(sorry) h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e that I cannot bear watching Vierra’s live performances (unless it’s lip-synched)—and hone in her stage act—hers has been inept, awkward, and all (besides looking bored and unenthusiastic as if stating “I don’t wanna be here.”). Idk if that’s because the pitch is quite high cuz she hardly hits the right key.

Nevertheless, i still like this flock of youngsters. I applaud their fine musical abilities at such young age—and hope they would only get better with time.

Final question: Do Vierra’s fans have a name?

*) But then other groups do the same thing (!!) although that doesn’t make it okay to do so. Furthermore, other musicians have claimed that the keys are so limited that it is actually normal to produce similar tunes—in other words, any similarity isn’t intentional. The rule for plagiarism is set beyond EIGHT bars, anyway. Which is a feeble standards imo. How many musicians have defended that they didn’t copy a song by asserting that the similarities didn’t exceed the predetermined eight bars? What a pointless argument. This makes me wish I had musical ability to compose songs whereby I’d just combine seven-and-half bars of several great songs into one ‘new’ song. No need for great composers, producers, let alone talents. Any decent song mixer, anyone??
